An inspiring programme on breastfeeding was jointly organized by the Health Ministry, Bangladesh Breastfeeding Foundation, and the Institute of Public Health Nutrition. High officials of the government have urged the people of the country not to give powdered milk or tinned food to infants. The health minister, director general of the Directorate General of health service (DGHS), director general of the Directorate General of Family Planning (DGFP), and other stakeholders made the call at the programme in observance of World Breastfeeding Week-2019 at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) on 6thh August. Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque, was the chief guest of the programme.World Breastfeeding Week has been observed nationally every year since 2010, after the Honorable Prime Minister declared it as the Annual World Breastfeeding week National Event 2010 in Bangladesh. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) has been successfully celebrating the World Breastfeeding Week from the first to seventh August every year since 2010. This annual celebration of World Breastfeeding Week is very important to emphasize the importance of exclusive and continuing breastfeeding and advocates for the promotion, protection and support all intervention related to breastfeeding.
The World Alliance for Breast feeding action has announced the slogan for World Breastfeeding Week 2019 as: “Empower parents, enable breastfeeding: Now and for the future”. The objective of World Breastfeeding Week 2019 is to emphasize three specific areas. 1) Inform people about the links between gender-equitable parental social protection; 2) connecting breastfeeding with parent- friendly values; and 3) gender-equitable social norms at all level to support breastfeeding with individuals and organizations for greater impact.
Bangladesh is third among 152 countries of the world in breast feeding activities (maternity leave, breast feeding corner in different government and non government organization, allowances for lactating working mother) according to World Breast Feeding trend Initiative 2015. Along with other government organization Green Life Medical College has been maintaining an outstanding status of breast feeding activities since 2016.There is a breast feeding corner in the Green Life Hospital at level four. Managing Director of Green Life Medical College Hospital Dr. Md. Mainul Ahasan has been awarded with a beautiful crest for these activities regarding breast feeding and Dr. Sheela Khan Associate Professor; Community Medicine, received the crest on behalf of Dr. Md. Mainul Ahasan on that very occasion.
